Head Coach Manny Diaz is 18-9 while leading Duke Blue Devils, including 11-5 in the ACC. Diaz only needs to win three games this season to match his win total over three years as the Miami Hurricanes head coach. It’s safe to say that he’s a much better fit at Duke than at Miami.
Diaz did have the awareness of coming to Duke after MikeElko a head coach that’s seen as a program builder. Elko left Diaz a team that won 17 games in two years. Diaz has built a one game lead on that on his own. But the issues for Diaz have always been high school recruiting and developing his own players. He had great defenses with Al Golden’s players when he took over as Miami DC, but never built upon that success again.

Throughput
Acquisition: The last three Duke prep recruiting classes average to 54th in FBS. Their portal classes are 56th which puts their acquisition at 55th in the country. That’s bottom tier P4 if you were wondering.
Development: Over the past two draft classes Duke has put 12 players into the NFL, which places them above FSU, Pitt, and UNC and below BC and Va. Tech.
Deployment: This preseason Bill Connelly’s SP+ has Duke ranked 44th in overall SP+. The Devils offense is 19th, the defense is 81st, and the kicking game is 36th. DC Jonathan Patke has a lot of work to do as well as a defensive-minded head coach like Manny Diaz.
Bottleneck
Duke is still Duke. It’s a stepping stone job in this era of NIL and the transfer portal. If Diaz can pull off a miracle 10-win season after losing Mensah he deserves a crack at a better gig in the ACC. If he tanks the season after losing Elko’s players and his starting QB he’ll be on the hot seat to start the ‘27 season.

The Duke Blue Devils are in a tough spot. Their starting QB and top WR from 2025 are now Miami Hurricanes. Live by the portal (Tulane and Harvard) die by the portal re Darian Mensah and Cooper Barkate. Head coach Manny Diaz used the portal heavily while at Miami but at Duke the administration won’t allow him to bring in guys like Tate Martell or Trevon Hill– which honestly is good for Diaz, save him from himself.
The Duke strength of schedule is 48th of 138 in FBS per CFB News. While they do travel to Illinois, Georgia Tech, UVA and Miami, they get to host Tulane, Clemson and Wake Forest.
Inventory
The inventory space includes returning production per Bill Connelly, the On3 top-100 list and the Athlon preseason All-Conference Team honorees. Duke is ranked 77th in returning production. They return only 49% from a year ago with Mensah and Barkate leaving. Duke’s starting 22 will rely on eight transfers including WalkerEget at QB.
The Devils did not have a single player on the On3 top-100 (they would’ve had Mensah stayed) or on the All-ACC team per Athlon (again, Mensah).

So who is Eget? He’s a transfer QB from San Jose State that threw 17 TD’s and nine INT’s while completing only 59% of his passes in ‘25. QB coach JonathanBrewer did help Mensah elevate his game and could do the same for Eget. Star RB NateSheppard returns with over 1,000 rushing yards and 11 TD’s on 5.7 yards per carry.
On defense, LB Luke Mergott returns for ‘26. In ‘25 Mergott logged 48 solo tackles and seven TFL’s. FS Dashawn Stone also returns after two INT’s and three PBU’s last season.
Operating Expense
Manny Diaz is rumored to make $4M per season at Duke. After winning nine games in each of his two seasons in Durham he’s averaging $445K per win, which is the biggest steal on Miami’s ACC schedule. Nine wins per season puts him ahead of Mario Cristobal, Mike Norvell, Bill Belichick and Pat Narduzzi who all assumedly make more scratch per season than Diaz.
The Goal
Elko and Diaz have set the Duke win total bar around 8.5 wins per season. The only issue with that is Las Vegas has the Blue Devils over/under at 5.5 after losing Mensah to the portal. Thumbing through their schedule I too see 5.5 wins on the horizon unless Eget really outplays his expectations as a low G6 QB.
Season Prediction: 5-7. Duke is set to have their first losing season since 2021, the end of the David Cutcliffe Era in Durham. I don’t think this season gets Diaz fired but it does put him on the hot seat to develop a QB and improve his defense.
