The Duke Blue Devils' football program hit the practice field for the first time in Fall camp on Wednesday afternoon. Coming off a 2025 season in which they won the Atlantic Coast Conference title and then the bowl game, Manny Diaz's team is trying to build off that.

They had momentum going into this offseason, but it was quickly deflated when quarterback Darian Mensah transferred to Miami.

That leaves a big hole on Duke's offense in a key position. Now, as Duke opens up camp, Diaz and his staff got a look at both quarterbacks on Wednesday as Walker Eget and Dan Mahan both got reps.

Following practice, Diaz spoke to the media about the quarterback battle and offered some good insight.

"Dan and Walker both took reps with the first group today," Diaz explained. "That's the first time that Walker has seen somewhat of a rush since last season. So, you've got one guy (Mahan) who has got a lot of promise, who hasn't done it yet, and you've got one guy who has got a lot of production, who is just getting into our offense and learning.

"There's also a lot of new names and faces who weren't really there in March and April too. So, like our pass defense, our passing offense will be something that, my suspicion, will improve week by week, day by day, and I think that's a great challenge, right?"

Eget transferred from San Jose State in the offseason, where he spent the past four seasons. He threw for 5,563 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions while completing 57.7 percent of his attempts there. He has a talented arm and could be the favorite to win the job early.

Then there is Mahan. The redshirt freshman may face the uphill battle in this contest with him not starting a single game in college yet. It really could be a decision based on experience for Diaz.

As for when a decision will be made, Diaz wouldn't reveal a set timeline. This could be taken all the way up until kickoff of the season opener against Tulane.
