SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The South Effingham boys basketball team hopes a good summer propels them to the state tournament for the first time since 2004, according to the Georgia High School Basketball Project website.
South Effingham continues to prepare for the upcoming season by playing in the Savannah High Summer League.
Last season, the Mustangs went 11-15 overall and 2-6 in Region 1-AAAAA. In the region tournament, they upset Greenbrier in the first round before losing to Statesboro.
A win would have sent them South Effingham to the playoffs. With several returners, Head coach Rico Campbell thinks they can push for a playoff spot.
“Be able to handle adversity through the competition, through the referees,” Campbell said. “You get down during games and be able to come back and win games and not lose leads. So stuff like that we want to work on. We love it because Savannah High League is real competitive. You’ll never know who you’re going to play, so times don’t even have the same people on every game just like in the regular season, so it gives everybody experience.”
The earliest GHSA allows teams to practice for the upcoming season is Oct. 19.
