When the 2025 NFL draft starts, the Miami Dolphins will some obvious holes in their starting lineup that need to be filled. While general manager Chris Grier says the team is still monitoring a few free agents, it's possible the Dolphins will be looking to plug one or two of those deficiencies early in the draft.
Luckily for the Dolphins, the draft class is strong at the spots where the team needs help, according to Grier.
"For us, the draft kind of aligns with the position of need for us that people perceive and what’s on our roster right now," Grier said. "We think at [No. 13 overall] there will be good players there that will be NFL-ready players but will also fill a need. If we choose to stay there, we’ll have options and if we move around we’ll take advantage of that as well."
While that's plenty vague about what position the Dolphins are eyeing with the No. 13 pick, there is some consensus about the strength of the draft class.
"The position groups that fueled Philly's win [in Super Bowl LIX] -- defensive end, defensive tackle and versatile defensive backs -- are the strengths of the 2025 draft," ESPN's Matt Miller wrote in February.
"This is a meat-and-potatoes draft," an NFL scout told Miller.
"There are 31 defensive linemen in my top 100 -- the most I've had at that group," Miller continued. "One NFL general manager said that 'a third of the first round might be edge rushers and defensive tackles.'"
The Dolphins currently have just four defensive linemen on their roster: Zach Sieler, Benito Jones, Matt Dickerson, and Neil Farrell. While Sieler and Jones were both starters, the latter two linemen spent much of the 2024 season on Miami's practice squad.
Cornerback is also a hole for the Dolphins and is only set to get worse after the team announced Tuesday that it's hunting for a trade partner to send away Jalen Ramsey. Among the first-round options at that position are Michigan's Will Johnson and Jahdae Barron of Texas.
Alternatively, quarterback and wide receiver are considered two of the less impressive position groups in the 2025 class.
