OTTUMWA — It only seems like the Ottumwa High School girls tennis season just ended.
It was actually two months ago. In less than two weeks, a new season will begin for the Bulldogs.
Madalynn Sertterh and Sonya Lundgren helped get a jump start on the upcoming season, battling each other for the girls 18-and-under championship at the 2025 Dan Staggs Tennis Tournament. Sertterh joined four-time Staggs champion Logan Storto in winning titles on Tuesday, sweeping Lundgren in the girls final on Tuesday morning 6-3 and 6-4 to claim her first championship in the tournament named after Ottumwa's Hall-of-Fame head tennis coach.
Storto earned his third 18-and-under singles title on Tuesday, outlasting doubles partner Dominick Rath in the boys' final. Storto rallied to win the opening set, 7-5, before bouncing back from a 6-0 loss in the second set to win a 10-7 third-set super-tiebreaker.
The second day of the tournament also saw the start of singles play in the 21-player adult division with five opening-round matches. Gretta Rath secured the first victory of the session, winning when Jarrett Wellings retired trailing 6-3 and 3-0 in the heat of the late afternoon.
Marcus Storto also advanced into the second round of the adult division singles tournament, sweeping Akian Jones 6-4 and 6-0 moving into a battle with defending tournament champion Toby Schmidt. Schmidt's father, Marty, got past Fernando Guerrero 6-1 and 6-2 in nearly two hours including a 28-point seventh game in the second set.
Moses Merrill, back on a tennis court to compete for the first time since wrapping up his senior season at Ottumwa High School in the spring of 2024, earned a 6-4 and 6-3 sweep of Saint Mary's (Kansas) senior Courtney Standley. Monse Guerrero-Chapula, doubles partner with Standley at Saint Mary's and a former Dan Staggs champion, closed out the second day of the tournament winning a thrilling battle with recent OHS grad Caleb Ziegler 5-7, 6-2 and 1-0 winning the decisive super-tiebreaker 10-7.
