OTTUMWA — In the end, all Marty Schmidt could do was smile.
"I threw everything I could think of at him," Schmidt said with a laugh.
The proud father of former Dan Staggs Tournament champion Toby Schmidt did his best to try to take down another Ottumwa graduate with recent college tennis experience. In the end, Quintin Hull put those skills to good use on Wednesday night securing the final spot in the adult singles' semifinals with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
"The pace of my son and the pace of the Hulls puts me in that spot where I'm trying to find the right rhythm," Marty Schmidt said. "I had some good shots. Quin's just way better, but it's fun to play."
Hull joined Garrett Ward in securing a single division quarterfinal win on Wednesday, sweeping 18-and-under singles champion Marcus Storto 6-1 and 6-0. Ward will face Toby Schmidt on Thursday while Hull takes on two-time defending singles' champion Tucker Henderson in the semifinal round.
"I've never beaten Toby or Tucker in my entire life. I've beaten everybody else in Ottumwa, but never those two," Hull said. "I've got to beat them eventually. I'll get a chance to go blow for blow with them."
Both Hull and Ward will be pulling double duty on Thursday, competing in both the singles and doubles tournament semifinals. Quintin Hull and twin brother, Trey, will take on Madalyn Sertterh and Caleb Ziegler in while Ward will join Marty Schmidt to take on Dominick Rath and Mark Hanson.
The adult women's tournament will also continue on Thursday with Jordan Lee, 2-0 in the tournament, facing Ilana Vasconez (0-1) while Abby Ellison (0-2) takes on Gretta Rath (0-1) in action starting at 5 p.m.
