The wrath of Carolina Panthers legend Steve Smith Sr. may have just claimed an unexpected victim.
Smith, as he does every week, joined WFNZ's The Kyle Bailey Show on Monday to talk some Panthers football. When asked about the fan base's criticism of second-year wideout Xavier Legette, the franchise's all-time leading receiver ripped right into the Carolina faithful.
"That's what this city does well, is [expletive] and complain," Smith stated. "When we went to the Super Bowl in 2003, I never forgot how people treated us my rookie year when we was 1-15. Now I know some people aren't gonna like to hear this—but if you're gonna ride and die with your team, ride or die. That's the probably the problem with this weak [expletive] city, is the fair-weather fans.
"And I said that that way because I've been in this city for 25 years now. And I've heard complaining about everything, no matter what the case is. These young men, including myself, just like young women, nobody's perfect. But when you ain't never did it—beyond elementary, high school . . . and then, yes, you buy a ticket, yes, you earn your way and right to give your criticism. But don't poop on the guy as if he's not out there trying to do his best."
Legette, after an underwhelming rookie campaign, has gotten off to a nightmarish start in 2025. He enters Week 3 having totaled just eight receiving yards on four receptions over a pair of Panthers losses.
His latest performance, from the team's 27-22 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2, proved to be a somewhat historical one. Legette became the first wide receiver in NFL history to amass negative receiving yards (-2) while recording at least eight targets.
So if this has been Legette's best, then perhaps the fans are fair—and not fair-weathered—to let out some frustration with the former first-round pick.
