Stetson drew a tough assignment Saturday.
On Oct. 18, the Hatters traveled to Clinton, South Carolina, to battle Pioneer Football League foe Presbyterian, which ranks 19th in the FCS. The Blue Hose jumped out to a 35-0 lead before Stetson got on the board in the fourth quarter. They cruised to a 42-7 victory.
The loss dropped the Hatters’ overall record to 3-5 and leveled their PFL mark to 2-2. Presbyterian remained undefeated at 7-0 and 3-0 in conference.
At the end of the first quarter, the Blue Hose led 7-0 after a 21-yard touchdown run by Justin Montgomery. He rumbled for a 4-yarder in the second quarter, and in the final seconds before halftime, Collin Hurst found Cincere Gill for a 29-yard score to make it 21-0.
All three of Prysbertian’s second-half touchdowns came via its ground attack. Montgomery provided his third end-zone trip of the day before ceding the scoring duties to Antonio Wright and Ty Englehart.
Stetson’s lone points arrived on a 26-yard toss from Gunner Chenier to Cayden Betts at the 10:35 mark of the fourth quarter. It capped an 11-play, 74-yard drive.
Between Chenier and Chris Stephenson, the Hatters threw for 125 yards, one touchdown and one interception. They rushed for 158 yards, paced by 65 from Betts.
Meanwhile, the Blue Hose rolled up 440 yards of offense.
Stetson returns to Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand next weekend. It hosts its homecoming game against St. Thomas at 1 p.m. Saturday. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
