Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown joined the chorus of NBA voices criticizing ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith.

During a Twitch live stream over the weekend, Brown called Smith a “clown” and the “face of clickbait media.” His rant came in the aftermath of Smith saying Brown ought to “be quiet” about the 2025-26 season being his favorite season as a Celtic.

“F— Stephen A. … Stephen A., Stephen B., Stephen C.,” Brown said. “My offer still stands: You want me to be quiet and stop streaming. … Well, I want you to be quiet and get off these networks. Because you’re not using your platform to do real journalism.”

On Monday’s edition of “First Take,” Smith responded to Brown with a seven-minute soliloquy.

“I’m not going to disrespect Jaylen Brown. … He’s pointing the finger in the wrong direction. Point it at yourself, bro,” Smith said.

NBA lightning rod

Brown is not the first NBA player to react negatively to Smith’s comments. In March, New York Knicks forward Josh Hart told Smith to “shut the hell up” over criticism of his play. Of course, Smith and superstar LeBron James have traded barbs after a courtside confrontation over Smith’s comments about Bronny James.

This time, Smith was not alone in wondering how Brown could label the past season his favorite as a Celtic. Boston blew a 3-1 first-round playoff series lead against the Philadelphia 76ers. Plus, Celtics star Jayson Tatum played just 16 regular-season games as he recovered from an Achilles tear.

Meanwhile, Brown starred on the 2024 Celtics squad that won the NBA title. In fact, Brown was the Finals MVP.

“I wasn’t saying something like shut up and dribble or something like that,” Smith said. “I was simply making the point you just lost. Nobody needs to hear from you now that this was your favorite season.”

Brown averaged a career-high 28.7 points per game and earned his fourth consecutive All-Star nod. He added 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.

Finally, Smith couldn’t help taking a swipe at Brown’s live-stream setup.

“Could you do me a favor, please? Get yo’ ass a studio. You looking like you in some dungeon, a little room or whatever,” Smith said.
