The Indiana Fever knew Caitlin Clark would become one of the biggest stars in the WNBA the moment they drafted her. What has happened since has gone far beyond basketball. Clark’s selection as grand marshal for the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 is another reminder that she has quickly become one of the defining sports figures in the entire state of Indiana. And based on Stephanie White’s reaction, the Fever coach understands exactly how meaningful the honor really is.

White smiled while discussing Clark’s upcoming role at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, calling it one of the biggest honors anyone can receive in the state.

“I think it’s going to be a lot of fun,” White told reporters. “To experience that as the grand marshal, I think, is one of the highest honors you can get in the state of Indiana.”

That comment stood out because Indiana does not hand out that role lightly. Clark now joins an impressive list of sports icons connected to the race, including Larry Bird, Reggie Miller, Peyton Manning and Fever legend Tamika Catchings.

Clark’s impact keeps growing beyond basketball

What makes the moment even bigger is how quickly Clark has become woven into the identity of Indianapolis sports culture. The Fever guard has only played parts of two WNBA seasons, yet she already feels connected to the city in a way few athletes ever do. Sellout crowds, national television attention and increased visibility around the franchise have followed Clark everywhere since arriving in Indiana.

Now she will stand in front of one of the most iconic sporting events in the world and deliver the ceremonial command to start the race. That kind of spotlight feels fitting considering how strong Clark’s start to the 2026 season has been. After injuries limited her to just 13 games last season, Clark has looked fully healthy again. Through four games, she is averaging 24.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 9.0 assists while helping lead the Fever to a 2-2 start.

White’s reaction also reflected something larger about Clark’s presence around the organization. This is no longer simply about a talented basketball player putting up numbers. Clark has become one of the faces of Indiana sports as a whole. Few athletes reach that level this quickly, especially in a market that has such deep basketball and racing traditions.

The Fever are still early in their 2026 journey, but moments like this continue showing how much Clark’s influence extends beyond wins and losses. And on Sunday, she will represent both the franchise and the city on one of the biggest stages Indiana has to offer.
