Now that Aaron Rodgers has officially returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2026 NFL season, there's no question who the team's starting quarterback is.

There appears to be a legitimate battle for the backup signal-caller position though.

The Steelers return veteran Mason Rudolph, as well as 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard.

Pittsburgh also selected Drew Allar out of Penn State in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Rudolph recently argued his case to open the campaign as the Steelers' second in command.

"This is a veteran team. We’re trying to win now. We don’t bring back Aaron Rodgers if you don’t want to win now. Cam Heyward and these guys have been around a long time, and we want to make a playoff push, and I know that I can contribute with that veteran culture," the 30-year-old said, according to The Athletic's Mike DeFabo. "I’ve won games here. I know I’m capable of winning games when my number’s been called upon. That’s what I’ve done."

Pittsburgh selected Rudolph in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft and he's spent most of his career with the Black and Gold.

The Oklahoma State product has gone 8-5-1 in 14 starts with the Steelers, recording a 64.5 completion percentage for 3,395 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
