DK Metcalf didn't have the season he was hoping to have in his Pittsburgh Steelers debut in 2025. But when looking at the offensive struggles as a whole, how much of the blame should really fall on his shoulders? With a brand-new coaching staff and offensive scheme in 2026, Metcalf is primed for a bounce-back year.
From now until the start of the regular season, we at Steelers Wire will be analyzing every player on the roster. Here's a look at Metcalf and what could be in store for his 2026 season.
After playing with the Seattle Seahawks for six seasons, Metcalf was traded to the Steelers in exchange for a second-round draft pick. In 2025, Metcalf recorded 59 receptions for 850 yards and six touchdowns. In his 15 appearances, Metcalf surpassed the 100-yard mark in just two games while failing to get more than 55 receiving yards in 11 contests. It was obvious the production wasn't there, but what can you expect when Mike Tomlin and Arthur Smith are running the show?
The Steelers added a few key pieces to their team that should more than help Metcalf have a bounce-back 2026: the hiring of Mike McCarthy and the Michael Pittman trade.
McCarthy, an offensive-minded head coach whom fans have been demanding for years, has been responsible for some all-time great offenses, like the 2011 Green Bay Packers and the 2021 Dallas Cowboys. Metcalf, who's slotted as the WR1, is a primary beneficiary of the regime change.
From a defensive perspective, it won't be easy to eliminate Metcalf from plays anymore now that Pittman has joined the Steelers. With Pittman, a 5,000-plus-yard playmaker, as a reliable WR2, defenses can no longer shift all of their focus to Metcalf, which should open him up for huge-play opportunities in 2026.
