The Pittsburgh Steelers have finally replaced the recently fired special teams coach Derius Swinton II with another familiar face from Mike McCarthy's previous coaching staffs.
After Swinton was reportedly fired due to workplace misconduct in May, the Steelers quietly hired Darian Thompson as their new special teams quality control coach without making an official announcement, per the team’s staff page.
Thompson, a former NFL safety who previously played for the New York Giants (2016-2017) and Cowboys (2018-2021), began his coaching career as part of McCarthy's Dallas coaching staff in 2023.
Thompson was the Cowboys' assistant linebackers coach in 2023, the assistant linebackers coach/quality control coach in 2024, and the secondary coach/nickels coach in 2025.
The Thompson hiring allows the Steelers coaching staff to put the Swinton situation behind them and solely focus on what's shaping up to be an exciting 2026 season with the Steelers.
