The Pittsburgh Steelers fan base has made it clear over the past few years that it no longer wants Mike Tomlin as the organization's coach.

Tomlin's decision to step away from coaching for now was met with a lot of happiness among many Steelers fans, though I continue to suggest that I don't think they should be as happy as they all made it seem.

At the end of the day, while Tomlin hasn't won in quite some time in terms of getting this team over the top, we still have to remember that this is a Hall of Fame head coach and one of the greatest to ever do it.

Regarding his replacement, Mike McCarthy, I think there's a lot to like about the former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers head coach.

McCarthy, who has proven throughout his coaching career that he can really run an offense, is in a situation that should benefit him and the Steelers. There's no guarantee he's going to find the same type of success that Tomlin did, but I like the idea of him coming in and making a major impact for this organization.

Speaking to reporters about that, it's something some of the quarterbacks have spoken about recently as well, including Mason Rudolph and Will Howard, two guys who have a job to play for this offseason.

“I think he’s a great fit for any quarterback,” Rudolph said after working with McCarthy during OTAs and minicamp, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I’m excited about an offense with a guy that’s notoriously been a great developer of quarterbacks. So being around him and that wealth of knowledge is exciting.”

“Everything that he teaches, everything that he coaches is so intricately detailed,” Howard said. “It really is. It’s just made me better in my footwork or in my ball-handling that I haven’t even thought about. Things that he brings up just makes you hyperfocused and locked in on those things that maybe seem minute, and seem minuscule, but really, really make a difference.”

The quarterback situation makes this more interesting than ever.

With the Steelers needing a franchise quarterback in the future due to Aaron Rodgers expecting to retire after this next campaign, there's no debate that Pittsburgh will need a guy to come in and develop whoever they want, whether that be Howard, Drew Allar, or even a veteran guy like Rudolph.

I think that's what made this hiring one of the more intriguing in the NFL this past offseason, and it's good to hear that players already have great respect for him.
