At some point after Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy decides to retires, he will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He's entering his 19th season as head coach, has a 174–112–2 record, 11-11 playoff record and a Super Bowl championship on his resume.
However, at least in 2026, McCarthy isn't one of the 10 best coaches in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus.
PFF ranked Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay No. 1 overall. The list itself is a mix of young, innovative coaches on the rise and veteran coaches with far more experience. But the notion that guys like New England Patriots HC Mike Vrabel and Los Angeles Chargers HC John Harbaugh are both better than McCarthy is an interesting argument.
The Steelers hired McCarthy this offseason to replace longtime head coach Mike Tomlin. Tomlin voluntarily stepped down shortly after the end of the 2025 regular season, opening the door for the team to add McCarthy.
