The Pittsburgh Steelers first head coaching search since 2007 has begun. Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Steelers have put in their first interview request since Mike Tomlin stepped down on Tuesday, requesting to interview Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase.
“The Pittsburgh Steelers first known head coach interview request is for Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, per source,“ Schefter reports. ”Baltimore, Cleveland and Las Vegas also have requested interviews with him during this hiring cycle.“
Scheelhaase’s coaching career began in 2015 at the University of Illinois, where he worked in football operations and as the running backs coach. He was on the Illinois staff until 2018 when he left for Iowa State to become their running back coach. He also served as their wide receivers coach from 2018-19 and as the coordinator for the run game from 2021-22. He was the Cyclones’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2023 under Matt Campbell before going to Los Angeles in 2024 as an assistant and pass game specialist, and taking the role as pass game coordinator in 2025.
The Steelers will obviously interview a wide pool of candidates, but their first interview, with a coach having a heavy offensive background, may be telling about what they are looking for.
