The Pittsburgh Steelers will undergo their third offensive change since the start of the 2023 season. After Arthur Smith replaced Matt Canada, new head coach Mike McCarthy hired Minnesota Vikings tight ends coach and pass game coordinator Brian Angelichio to help run his offense.

Speaking to the media for the first time on Friday, Angelichio was asked about Will Howard, and he gave the young quarterback a glowing review.

“I’ve really enjoyed Will,” Angelichio said via Alan Saunders. “He’s got a great personality, he’s been impressive in the quarterback room. Obviously, we haven’t got out on the grass with him, but his ability to communicate, articulate, pick up the scheme … it’s been really impressive.”

Howard impressed early on in training camp last July before suffering a hand injury that kept him out of preseason action. The former sixth-round pick has earned the praise of many within the organization, including McCarthy himself when he spoke in his introductory press conference, citing that he is incredibly excited to work with the Ohio State product. Additionally, Aaron Rodgers praised Howard in an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show earlier this year.

“I’m a big Will Howard, not just fan as a human, but believer as a player,” Rodgers said. “And when his time comes, he’s going to be more than capable of being, not just a consistent starter, but a guy who can stick in the league for a long, long time.”

Should Rodgers decide not to come back, Howard and Mason Rudolph would be in position to battle it out to be the Week 1 starter.
