The Pittsburgh Steelers need to sign the ever-talented edge rusher Nick Herbig to a long-term extension. But one insider believes it isn't as easy as it seems.

According to insider Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers are challenged with a "very steep hill to climb" when it comes to signing Herbig to an extension.

“Alex Highsmith is making $14.5 million. How do you sign Nick Herbig to more money than what you’re paying your starter?” Fittipaldo said via the North Shore Drive podcast. “The more I think about this, the more likely I think it is he does hit free agency. ... Maybe they can get that done in February or early March next year before free agency starts. But getting that done this summer, it just seems like it’s a very steep hill to climb.”

Over the past two seasons, Herbig recorded 13 sacks and seven forced fumbles despite seeing far less playing time than Highsmith and T.J. Watt.

While Herbig is one of the most underrated edge rushers in the league, it remains to be seen if Pittsburgh can sign him to a long-term extension this offseason. But as Fittipaldo pointed out, signing him to a new deal immediately after the 2026 season could be a more realistic scenario.
