On Tuesday, just minutes after Pittsburgh Steelers edge defender Nick Herbig addressed the media about a potential new contract, it was reported that there was a deal in place to the tune of four years and $100 million that includes $42 million in guaranteed money. This gives the Steelers the highest-paid trio of pass rushers in the NFL by a longshot.
Here are the big takeaways from the move.
It's unprecedented that a player gets a $100 million contract and not be a starter but here we are. Herbig only started six games last season so getting this level of money as a reserve is uncharted territory. Having said that, you have to figure out a way to get all three top edge guys on the field.
Going off of the notion of getting Herbig into the starting lineup, could the team move him to inside linebacker and play him in a Micah Parsons-type role?
Depending on what the team wants to do with Herbig, there are any number of Steelers linebackers who could be on the trade block. T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Patrick Queen need to all call their agents and find out how secure their spot is on the roster after the Herbig contract.
The other guy who was holding in for a new contract is cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Will this massive contract extension for Herbig mean Porter's deal is coming next, or is his contract no longer a priority due to money? Keep an eye out for what comes next and how Porter responds to this.
