The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to play the quarterback waiting game with Aaron Rodgers, only now, they have an ace up their sleeve ... kind of.

The Steelers and general manager Omar Khan selected Ohio State quarterback Will Howard in the sixth round, and haven't made any moves for another quarterback this offseason other than bringing in Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson.

Is Howard the Steelers' new ace up their proverbial sleeve?

Those moves, or lack thereof, would indicate Khan feels pretty strongly that at some point, Rodgers is signing.

Yet, here we are.

NFL insider Adam Schefter has been personally invested in the Rodgers offseason saga, and said on the "Unsportsmanlike" podcast he thinks Rodgers will make his decision known before Pittsburgh's mandatory minicamp, which runs June 10-12.

"I think the Steelers' mandatory minicamp is next month," Schefter said. "Forget the exact date, roughly June 10. I would think that we would get a decision from Aaron Rodgers shortly before then about whether or not he should play. To me, you can't miss that mandatory minicamp where you start gearing up. I guess you can, but that's not ideal."

That seems like odd timing, since Rodgers has made a career out of skipping out on "mandatory" minicamps, including bolting for Egypt last offseason during the New York Jets' mandatory minicamp.

Additionally ... Not March. Not April. Not May.

June? That is bad news for a team trying to become ... well ... a team.

Even Steelers ownership is still in the dark, although Art Rooney II said during the NFL Draft that he still feels good about Rodgers joining the team eventually.

"We're still kind of getting the same signals we've been getting recently that he does want to come here," Rooney said. "I do think we may get word soon, obviously, with things starting to crank up here with the offseason program, etc. If he's coming, I would like to get him here soon for some of that."

"Soon'' has suddenly taken on a new and sad meaning in The Steel City.

As we've gotten used to writing at the end of every Rodgers-based piece in Pittsburgh, "we'll wait and see."
