Steelers embracing a future that Mike Tomlin never could

One of the most significant changes between new Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy and old head coach Mike Tomlin is McCarthy's willingness to embrace the future and trends, while Tomlin was stuck in the past. During a press conference from training camp this week, McCarthy gave another perfect example of how he is using technology to make this team better in a way that Tomlin never would.

McCarthy noted the team is using GPS technology on players to help construct his practice plan.

"Everything's regulated. There's obviously science behind it. We're in tune with the conditioning of our players. The commitment the players made in the spring was evident. ...This is all by design. There's history behind it. … Everybody has a genetic background that you pay attention to. Some guys can rev higher than others. And so this is part of the process."

Much of the league has dialed into the idea of GPS, analytics, and data to maximize performance but Tomlin always shrugged off the notion of any sort of change in philosophy. This is a big part of the reason why his message wore thin with his players and they underperformed.
