The Pittsburgh Steelers have been assembling a new coaching staff since introducing Mike McCarthy as head coach on Tuesday. McCarthy has brought in James Campen as offensive line coach and Patrick Graham as his defensive coordinator, as well as making several other assistant hires, which you can find in our assistant coach tracker.

McCarthy was hoping to retain quarterbacks coach Tom Arth, linebackers coach Scott McCurley, and secondary coach Gerald Alexander. However, the latter is taking a job elsewhere.

Per Ian Rapoport, Alexander is joining the Minnesota Vikings staff as the defensive pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach.

More additions for the #Vikings: Gerald Alexander will become the defensive pass game coordinator and DBs coach, while former #Jaguars DC Ryan Nielsen comes on as D-line coach and defensive run game coordinator, per me and @TomPelissero.

Alexander was on the Steelers’ staff from 2022-23 before leaving to join the Las Vegas Raiders as their safeties coach. He returned in 2025 as the defensive backs coach in Pittsburgh.
