Championship!!!!
By Jerry Brown, Tribune
Will the higher power that seems hell-bent on giving the Cardinals every possible, conceivable opportunity to take a seven-step drop into the NFC playoffs — otherwise known as the losers bracket — please quit it already?
The Big Red is 4-8. They’ve lost three in a row. Their quarterback has all the confidence of Eyeore, their aging running back is up on blocks, and their offensive line can’t make any.
Still, Dennis Green’s preseason boast stays on life support because the rest of the West has fallen and can’t get up:
• Can’t beat the 1-11 49ers when they are at full strength? Fine. San Francisco leaves its starting quarterback (Tim Rattay) and only decent running back (Kevan Barlow) behind for the game Sunday in Tempe.
• Can’t beat the 6-6 Rams next week without some help? Gotcha. Quarterback Marc Bulger has already been ruled out for next week and Marshall Faulk didn’t play last week and remains questionable.
• Just wait. Three weeks from now, Matt Hasselbeck and Shaun Alexander of the Seahawks will be called for jury duty before the Cardinals get to Seattle.
Even with all the good fortune, the Cardinals still have to actually do something. I haven’t seen a scenario yet where Arizona can qualify for the postseason with four wins.
