Starfleet Academy has its first starring name and it's a huge one

Star Trek is getting bigger and grander with its latest series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The series will take place after the events of Star Trek: Discovery and while we're not sure who from that show will be coming over to his new one, we do know who the leading name will be. It was announced by Variety that Starfleet Academy will in fact be led by Holly Hunter.

Hunter, an Academy Award Winner, will star as the "captain and chancellor" of the academy according to Variety. The show will feature the growth of cadets into Starfleet members and Hunter will serve as the biggest name on the cast and in the show.

Assuming they are staying in the same time period, not sure I'm all that interested.

I just watched the first two episodes. I just don't know about this show. It's not bad but it's not great. First, there was a mixed bag of FX for me. When Discovery hit the screen, I was wowed by the quality of the FX. There are a few scenes in this show that seemed "budget" but then a few that seems pretty damn good. A few of the characters are interesting and few are annoying. The plot is different concept, but I just don't know if that can sustain a show.

I guess just overall it's such a mixed bag for me out of the gate. I just wasn't WOWED by the show at all.

By the way, there was one really cool scene where they show past members of Starfeelt Academy. If you can.....pause it on that scene. It reveals some cool names and ranks some of those characters achieved before their time was up. That idea was pretty cool. For example, Ensign Kim actually makes something of himself. Anybody that has seen Garrett Wang at a convention knows he jokes about that.

This show isn't very good. I mean it has had some good episodes. The episodes worth watching all have one thing in common. High stakes. Those episodes have been pretty good. The problem? The setting doesn't lend for that on a regular basis. Not sure who thought the academy was a good setting. Not even the writers thought so. How do we know? They had to write in taking the ship out for "training" as part of the show.

There have been some cool connections to previous shows and the latest episode with Paul Giamatti is worth the watch but it's not enough to sustain this show for 5 years. I predict this will be an early cancellation unless the creative team pulls a rabbit out of a hat.

I love all things Trek but I can’t bring myself to subscribe to Paramount + for this series. I canceled my subscription as soon as Picard was over, and I gave up on Discovery prior to its last season. I just can’t get in to the new stuff. Is Strange New Worlds any good?

STW been a mixed bag for me. I do love the cast and when the show nails it, it nails it. There have been some real stinkers though on that show as well. Overall, worth the watch. This show though? I wouldn't recommend anybody subscribing to Paramount+ for this show.
