CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — A birdie putt on the final hole proved to be the difference as Jack Spencer claimed the 57th annual Briarbrook Invitational title over Austin Hafner on Sunday.

Both golfers hit the green on their second shot of the par four 18th hole, with each golfer landing 12 to 15 feet from the hole. Spencer one-putted the hole to win the title with a three-day 9-under total of 207.

Hafner went par on the final hole to finish one stroke back with an 8-under 208.

Hafner was Spencer’s assistant coach while at Carl Junction High School. He is now an assistant coach at Clarke University in Iowa, and Spencer plays for the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he was named to the Summit League All-Freshman team last month.

“It feels really good, especially the way it happened — a chip-in on 17 and then the birdie on 18 to win by one,” Spencer said. “It’s one of those things you practice for and you kind of imagine coming down 17 and 18 when you are a little kid. It’s crazy that it actually happened like that."

Hafner said he was thankful to even be able to finish the invitational after strong storms Saturday night fell numerous trees and left a path of debris on the course. Members of the Carl Junction community showed up in force early Sunday morning to clear the course for play.

He talked about Sunday’s final round and finishing second behind Spencer.

“This was probably the most fun I’ve had playing golf in a long time. ... He made it fun, made it interesting, and congrats to him. There is a lot to say about him. He’s a DI golfer for a reason. He’s got it all going on, and I’m just proud of him.”

Sunday’s championship round featured a crowded field atop the leaderboard with just two strokes separating the top four golfers.

Defending Briarbrook Invitational champion Harry Satterlee entered Sunday’s championship round with a 1-stroke lead over both Nathan Mueller and 2025 runner-up Spencer after shooting a 9-under 135 in the first two rounds. Hafner, the 2024 winner, was two strokes behind Satterlee with a 137. Satterlee shot 66 on Friday and 69 on Saturday. Both Spencer and Mueller carded 67s on Friday and 69s on Saturday (136). Hafner shot 70 on Friday and trimmed three strokes off that Saturday with a 67 (137).

Satterlee struggled Sunday with a 79 and finished fourth with a 214. Cooper Forth carded a 72 on Sunday and finished third overall with a 212. Mueller shot 82 and fell to ninth place with a 2-over 218.

In other results, Corey Clingan shot a 1-over 216 to win the President’s Flight. Dan Weston (217) was second, and Mark Bruder (218) finished third.

In Flight A, Dustin Edge carded 226 to finish first. Chad Lind and Jack Patterson both shot 227 and tied for second.

Cam Lawrence shot a 233 to win Flight B. Luke Shallenberger and Bryan Gaddy tied for second with 235.

Bryan Lawson won Flight C with a 240. Zach Wrensch was second (247), and Rich Castillo was third (249).

In Flight D, Steve Thomas was the winner with a 254. Tyler Martin (258) was second, and Larry Cowger (261) finished third.

Defending champion Shawn Platner went par on all three rounds and earned the seniors title with a 216. Doug Gaddis was runner-up with a 220, and Scott Whitaker, the 2025 runner-up, was third with a three-day total of 224.

Keith Phillips won the Seniors Presidents Flight with a 231. Randy Sohosky was runner-up (235) and Greg Crawford was third (237).
