It was another banner day for Spanish River track and its star twins Preston and Casey Sangely at the 4A Region 4 track championships at Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar on May 2.

And the Sharks girls made a good showing too with its newcomer from Spain, Alba Altunez-Perez leading the charge.

Preston Sangely captured the regional championship in three events – the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

Sangely will move on as a top contender at the state championships at Florida State next weekend. His brother, Casey, finished runner-up to Preston in the 1600 and 3200.

Preston Sangely timed a 4:24.18 in the 1600 with his brother right behind him at 4:25.38. In that race, Spanish River had four of the top six finishers to score points with Avery Rand fourth and Ryan Cook sixth.

Spanish River boys also took second place in the 4x800 relay. The Sharks finished in the team scoring third after Flanagan and Columbus. Park Vista was fifth and Palm Beach Central was sixth in the 31-team field.

Spanish River girls excelled in the 1600 and 3200. Antunez-Perez, a junior, won two regional titles and finished 1-2 with teammate Lailani Levy in both races. They move onto states.

Spanish River girls also won the 4x800 relay with Makaela Morilla and Julie D’Emic teaming with Antunez-Perez and Levy. Spanish River girls finished fourth in the girls.

“I did what I had to do: a tune-up before states,’’ Preston Sangely said. “I worked hard all year and learned to put focus on what actually matters.’’
