Lamine Yamal has added fuel to one of the biggest rivalries in international football today, as the Spain forward fired a shot at France, whom they could face down the line in this year’s World Cup knockouts.
“No. They haven’t beaten us since the Euros. They can’t be better than us,” Yamal told the media via El Partidazo de COPE. “They’re at an excellent level, have wonderful players, but I don’t think they’re above anyone. For me, there’s no one above Spain.”
To Yamal’s point, Spain has had its way with France recently, including a 2-1 victory in the Euro 2024 semifinals en route to winning the continental tournament, and a 5-4 win in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League semifinals.
But in terms of recent form, France has the edge, as their team has yet to taste defeat in the World Cup, having won all their Group I matches and eliminating Sweden in the Round of 32. Meanwhile, Spain was held to a goalless draw by Cape Verde before defeating Saudi Arabia (4-0) and Uruguay (1-0) in Group H.

Lamine Yamal strongly believes that Spain can hit another level in this year’s World Cup. After winning Group H, they’ll face Austria in the Round of 32 and could meet France as early as the quarterfinals.
“It’s true that everyone expected us to play better, but we faced different types of teams, none of them European,” Yamal said. “They were tough matches, especially the third one. There were a lot of stoppages. The game against Saudi Arabia was good, and the Cape Verde match was the opener.”
“I don’t think we’ve played a really great match yet… Once we hit our stride — and we definitely will — we’ll be almost unstoppable,” he added.
Yamal is soaking up his first World Cup, but he has been dealing with a hamstring injury recently. However, he should be good to go on Thursday, although he might not play the full 90 minutes again to manage his workload.
