Mar. 27—ST. PAUL — After dropping a heartbreaker in its first-ever state tournament appearance in the Class 1A state quarterfinals on Thursday, the Southland boys basketball team bounced back on Friday.
The Rebels, who were seeded No. 4 in the tournament, fell to No. 5 Hills-Beaver Creek 72-69 on Thursday afternoon at Target Center. They had a quick turnaround and hit the court again, battling with Upsala to secure a 74-67 double-overtime win in the consolation semifinals on Friday morning at Concordia University's Gangelhoff Center.
Six-foot-1 junior Tate Goergen led the way for the Rebels with 25 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and four assists. Six-foot-3 junior Henry Wiste added 22 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Six-foot-5 junior Ethan Schammel contributed 13 points and six rebounds.
The Rebels were up 33-27 at halftime. They were ahead 59-56 with 2:33 to play before Upsala's William Schafer hit what would be the game-tying 3-pointer with 1:54 left on the clock. Neither team scored again before the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Southland will now play one more game for a chance to take fifth place in the tournament. The Rebels square off with Liberty Classical Academy at 8 p.m. on Saturday at Gangelhoff Center.
