Missouri Southern State University's softball team wrapped up the Teri Mathis/Zenner MIAA/NSIC crossover tournament with a pair of wins Saturday over South Dakota's University of Sioux Falls at Pat Lipira Field.
The Cougars (12-13) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in Game 1, courtesy of a Hanna Raethz single that scored Meghan Jochimsen, but Southern answered in the bottom of the inning when Emily Perry doubled and plated Bailey Dillon.
The Lions, ranked fourth in the country, took the lead for good in the bottom of the third when Taylor Nuckolls singled to center field and brought Dillon across the plate. Nuckolls later scored on a Sioux Falls error, and Maddie Rolfs made it a 4-1 game when she doubled to right field and scored Gianna Saggese.
Sioux Falls inched closer in the top of the fifth with an Emma Kristof single that plated Brianna DeLorenzo and made it a 5-2 game.
Micah Snider increased MSSU’s lead to 6-2 with a single that scored Rolfs in the bottom of the fifth, and Katie Gray hit a double in the bottom of the sixth that plated Dillon and gave the Lions the 7-2 win.
Dillon went 3 for 4 with three runs to lead MSSU at the plate. Rolfs finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run, and Nuckolls was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
Kiki Pickens (9-2) earned the win after giving up two runs — one earned — on four hits while striking out three and walking none in 5 1/3 innings. Kadence Janney earned her fifth save of the season after giving up no runs on one hit in 1 2/3 innings. She struck out three and walked none.
Kristof led the Cougars at the plate. She finished 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Maddi Duncan (7-5) was tagged with the loss. She gave up seven runs — four earned — on 11 hits while striking out six and walking none in six innings.
Game 2 turned out to be a classic pitchers' duel, with the Lions claiming a 1-0 win.
The only run of the game was a solo home run by Southern’s Carsen Tinkler in the bottom of the second inning. Tinkler was given the green light on a 3-0 pitch and gave the Lions a 1-0 lead with the bomb.
Tinkler finished 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI.
Southern starter Emily Davis (9-1) hurled a complete-game one-hitter, striking out five and walking one in seven innings.
Sioux Falls' lone hit of the game came off a Raethz single to left field on an 0-2 count in the top of the fourth inning.
Lauryn Foudree shouldered the loss for the Cougars. She gave up one run on six hits, while striking out one and walking none in six innings.
The Lions (25-3) begin an extended eight-game road trip Friday when they travel to Fort Hays State University. They return home for a doubleheader against Northeastern State University beginning at 1 p.m. April 4 at Pat Lipira Field.
