COLUMBIA — South Carolina women's basketball is back on campus to start summer practices, according to a social media post.

The program posted photos of players practicing at Carolina Coliseum with the caption "We are soooooooo back!" on both Instagram and X on June 22.

The NCAA rule is that once summer school starts, teams can engage in sessions for a period of eight weeks, but the exact start date is up to each team.

In 2025, the Gamecocks began practice on June 24.

Previously, the NCAA's rule for the summer was "athletes can participate in up to eight hours per week for weight-training, conditioning and skill instruction. The skill instruction cannot exceed more than four hours per week."

A spokesperson for the NCAA explained to The Greenville News via email that there was a change to the rule in April that's effective immediately. There's no longer a four-hour weekly limit for skill-related instruction, but teams still can't go over eight hours per week in skills instruction, weight training and conditioning during the summer.

Coach Dawn Staley has several players returning, including starters Tessa Johnson and Joyce Edwards, and reserves Maddy McDaniel, Adhel Tac, Agot Makeer, Ayla McDowell and Alicia Tournebize. She also gets back Chloe Kitts and Ashlyn Watkins, both of whom missed the 2025-26 season.

Kitts tore her ACL in October 2025; Watkins tore her ACL in January 2025 but announced in July 2025 that she was taking the entire year off from both school and basketball.

The Gamecocks brought in one player from the transfer portal in Jordan Lee, a guard from Texas, in addition to five freshmen: Jerzy Robinson, Oliviyah Edwards, Kaeli Wynn, Kelsi Andrews and Justine Loubens (from France).

South Carolina will open the season against Maryland on Nov. 2 in Paris.
