COLUMBIA — South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley's book has gotten attention from many people over the last year but most recently, it's even dipped into the TV universe.
On Aug. 7, Apple Books released a list of Ted Lasso's favorite books. Among them is Staley's memoir "Uncommon Favor: Basketball, North Philly, My Mother and Life Lessons I learned from All Three," which was released on May 20 2025.
Ted Lasso is the star of the show of the same name played by Jason Sudeikis, who also developed the show. The fourth season, which shifted focus from men's soccer to women's soccer, premiered on Aug. 5. The show's premise follows that Lasso was an American college football coach who got hired to coach soccer in England.
"Now here's what I call a true goldfish mentality: Legendary NCAA coach, former WNBA player and all-around bada** Dawn Staley teaches us how to face life's setbacks and hiccups with a game face so strong it'll knock you right off the court," the graphic said about Staley's book.
The goldfish mentality refers to one of Lasso's coaching philosophies about having a short memory on the field when it comes to mistakes.
Sudeikis is a women's basketball fan and attends college and WNBA games. He was in Cleveland in 2024 when the Gamecocks and Staley won their third national championship, however he was sporting Iowa colors.
On July 16, he was seen wearing a South Carolina women's basketball hoodie made by the company Playa Society at the Fanatics Fest in New York City. While it's unclear if they met or talked, Staley and Sudeikis were at the 2026 WNBA All-Star game in Chicago in July.
Staley encouraged Sudeikis to come to a South Carolina game this season.
On X she replied to the book list and wrote "@jasonsudeikis Mr. Lasso himself thank you for reading Uncommon Favor!! Can’t wait to see you on at a @GamecockWBB game!"
