Sophie Cunningham’s true political beliefs get ‘exposed’

The WNBA is in the middle of its 2026 All-Star Weekend. Unfortunately, at a time when the focus should be on celebrating the great players that make the league so special, a lot of the discourse surrounding the sport has had little to do with the actual basketball being played.

One of the weekend’s biggest storylines has revolved around Indiana Fever reserve guard Sophie Cunningham. In an ESPN feature, Cunningham, who is averaging 9.3 points off the bench, spoke about the need to “protect women’s sports.”

“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,'” Cunningham said. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

Cunningham, who some fans have dubbed “MAGA Barbie,” then said that contrary to popular beliefs, her political views are right down the middle.

“I’m very much in the middle,” she said. “I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that’s all I’ve ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume.”

However, a recent report from MeidasTouch News is refuting these claims.

Per J.D. Wolf, “Sophie Cunningham’s recent TikTok activity includes reposts of multiple videos aligned with MAGA messaging on immigration, national identity, and political expression by athletes.”

Wolf reported that one of Cunningham’s reposts is a December 5 video from TikTok account @matrixunni, whom he claims is ” a creator whose content frequently focuses on MAGA social and cultural commentary.”

In the video, @matrixunni claims that illegal immigrants into the United States shouldn’t expect sympathy when it comes to Immigration enforcement.

She’s not alone​

Cunningham appears to have at least one high-profile figure in sports media who thinks she makes a lot of sense when she speaks her mind. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith recently said that her comments on trans youth are “a thousand percent right.”

“You can’t look out for a trans athlete at the expense of biological women,” he said. “What do they do? Just like there’s a sport for men, there should be a sport for women. Get a sport for trans athletes. Or a league, rather.

“You want to swim? Compete against other trans athletes. You want to box? Compete against other trans athletes. You want to play basketball or football? Compete against other trans athletes.”

“Borderline non-issue”​

However, one of Cunningham’s oldest friends, West Wilson, with whom she also co-hosts her podcast, Show Me Something, is cutting against the grain when it comes to the topic.

“Okay, transgender athletes in American sports is such a borderline nonexistent issue that right-wingers have convinced a massive portion of people in our country that it— that these people are like a threat to sports in America when mathematically that’s not the case at all,” Wilson said in a video posted to TikTok.


“And by continuing to platform this, f*cking politicians, athletes, journalists, news outlets, you’re only isolating transgender people even more by making them seem like this giant group of people is a threat to society, a threat to sports, when that’s just not proportionately the truth in any capacity. There is like 10 transgender athletes in all of the NCAA, and so I think there are unique questions that can be handled on individual basis, but to allow this to take our attention away from like housing and healthcare and wars and all the other actual harmful sh*t in our country is dumb.”

Cunningham may claim to be politically neutral, but her comments and actions on social media appear to indicate somthing different altogether.
