Son of former Iowa basketball coach entering transfer portal

Jack McCaffery, one of former Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery's sons, is entering the NCAA transfer portal.

McCaffery signed with Butler in the 2025 class after earning Iowa’s 2024-25 Gatorade State Player of the Year honors. A 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward, the Iowa City West product was ranked as the nation's 144th player overall, as the No. 28 power forward and as the top player in Iowa, per 247Sports.

McCaffery informed The Field of 68 that he intends to transfer from Butler.

McCaffery appeared in just nine games before seeking a medical redshirt. McCaffery averaged 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds per game on 40% field goal shooting, 21.4% accuracy from 3-point distance and 75% from the free-throw line.

Butler head coach Thad Matta announced his retirement after the Bulldogs finished 16-16 (7-13 Big East) and missed the NCAA Tournament this season.
