Sequoyah made a statement with their bats in two district wins over Salina.
In back-to-back days, the Lady Eagles strung together timely hits, seized momentum with big innings and leaned on the steady arm of Brooklynn Roper to complete a two-game sweep of the Lady Wildcats in District 3A-7 play.
Sequoyah opened with a 10-3 victory Monday before following it up with a 6-3 win Tuesday to secure its first district sweep of the season.
GAME 1: SEQUOYAH 10, SALINA 3
The game turned in the second inning, when the Lady Eagles exploded for 6 runs that left Salina stunned.
Lexis Breshears got it going with an RBI single before Lanie Thompson roped a triple to bring home two more. Bayli Sappington, Faith Dorsey and Laney Henry each followed with run-producing swings and suddenly Sequoyah was in control.
The Lady Eagles had already taken a 2-0 lead in the opening inning on a Lady Wildcats miscue, and the second-inning outburst only widened the gap.
Breshears continued to set the tone throughout the night, driving in 3 runs on 2 hits, including a sacrifice fly in the third and a towering solo homer in the sixth that put the finishing touch on Sequoyah’s offense.
In the circle, Roper silenced Salina's rally attempts.
Despite issuing 7 walks, she struck out 8 batters and limited the damage to just 3 runs on 5 hits across seven innings. She received plenty of help behind her as the Lady Eagles swiped 5 bases, with Kristen Holt stealing 2.
GAME 2: SEQUOYAH 6, SALINA 3
A day later, it was Sequoyah’s bottom of the lineup that made the difference.
Carly Bowman, hitting eighth, delivered the game’s biggest swing in the second inning — a two-run single that gave the Lady Eagles the early edge.
They padded the lead in the third when Roper helped her own cause with an RBI single down the right-field line and Sappington added a sacrifice fly. That cushion proved crucial as Salina tried to claw back with 10 hits on the day.
Roper, however, gutted out another complete game.
She scattered those 10 hits while allowing just 3 runs, striking out 3 and working around 4 walks. Dorsey and Laney Henry each sparked the offense with their speed, combining for multiple stolen bases as Sequoyah tallied 5 swipes in all.
Bowman led the charge at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 day and 2 RBIs.
The Wildcats stayed competitive behind multihit efforts from three different players, but the Lady Eagles' timely hitting and knack for creating pressure proved too much.
