Section 9 Class AA softball champion Minisink Valley ran into an offensive buzzsaw as Nassau County champion rolled to a 14-2, six-inning victory in the state semifinals at Grand Slam Park in Binghamton on Friday, June 12.

Every batter in the Colts lineup picked up at least one base hit, with 14 in all.

Minisink finished the season at 19-5. The Warriors were held to just four base hits, the biggest a two-run home run by leadoff hitter Keira Filip in the third inning, pulling Minisink within 3-2.

Calhoun responded with three more runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth. A single tally in the sixth allowed Calhoun to post the mercy rule victory.

Minisink starter Emily Smith retired her first four batters but got in trouble with control in the second, giving up a single and three walks (the last forcing in a run). She was an out away from getting out of the third before giving up a walk, a two-run double by Kaitlyn DiPaola and a throwing error allowed a sixth run to score.

Smith gave up a leadoff homer to dead center by Adriana Lazo to open the fifth and then gave up a walk in between three singles before getting pulled. Reliever Charlie Ringus gave up three singles and walk before getting the final two outs of the fifth but not before going down 13-2. Ringus injured herself on a swing in the bottom half of the frame, forcing Smith back into the game as a hitter and pitcher.

Calhoun starter Sophia Nicastro (who entered with a 2.28 ERA) looked strong throughout. She gave up four hits, struck out nine and stranded three Minisink runners.

DiPaola (2 RBI), Madison Martins (RBI) and Lazo (5 RBI) each had three hits to pace Calhoun.

An early afternoon thunderstorm led to a delayed start by 2 hours, 20 minutes.
