The 2026 season proved to be another successful baseball season for UNC, which won 54 games and made its 13th College World Series in program history.
The Diamond Heels won their first three games in Omaha, before losing to Oklahoma in Game 1 of the CWS Finals, then came from behind to win Game 2.
North Carolina didn't enjoy that same success in Game 3, losing 13-2 in a game quickly decided by the Sooners' hot bats.
UNC started freshman Jackson Rose, who played well in the NCAA Tournament up until Monday. Oklahoma chased Rose in the third inning, tagging him for three runs on six hits. The Diamond Heels utilized six different pitchers on Monday, never able to neutralize the Sooners' power that helped get them to Omaha.
Offense wasn't an issue for North Carolina, which recorded nine hits. UNC largely failed to cash in on those opportunities, though, leaving seven runners on base. Jake Schaffner and Owen Hull each recorded two hits to lead the Diamond Heels, while Hull and Gavin Gallaher each drove in a run.
North Carolina remains the greatest college baseball program without a National Title, now 0-3 in Finals trips. UNC broke its Finals losing streak in Game 2, but still can't get over that hump.
Fans have every right to be frustrated, but the Diamond Heels still finished as one of the last two teams standing in college baseball. As you look ahead to summer and later UNC football season, let's look at several postgame reactions from social media below:

This. All series long. And it’s maddening. pic.twitter.com/nxDoL5HTxC

ABS can’t come soon enough
And while we’re on the subject of, uh, questionable calls, did anyone get an answer as to why they stopped Caden’s warmup early?

Questionable pitching decisions by Scott Forbes
I’m shocked tbh at the guy who threw 65 pitches 29 hours ago isn’t effective today haha

Glauber throwing on zero rest after 70 pitches yesterday. Does #UNC HC Scott Forbes even remotely care about arm health?

Pretty good summation here of the UNC side of things. I would only add that North Carolina also just plain ran into a freight train in Oklahoma, which already took down national seeds GT, Kansas, Alabama and Georgia. https://t.co/du4w6jimUN

Season is over
A positive take on UNC's season ending
No matter how this game ends. The last 12 days here in the Omaha have been some of the most fun and memorable times I’ve ever experienced. I am so fortunate to have great friends and family that helped make this happen. I can’t recommend the CWS enough.

The freshmen balled out
-Jason DeCaro in 2024
-Walker McDuffie & Ryan Lynch last year
-Caden Glauber & Jackson Rose this year
What a crazy run of freshmen arms for the Diamond Heels.

The CWS curse lives on
I swear it seems like this program is cursed when it comes to Finals series.

It really might never happen for UNC.
Omaha has been very unkind to teams from the Triangle.

UNC doing non-UNC things for a natty. These are the differences in the game.

College baseball is a simple sport. 64 of the best teams in the country make the tournament and at the end either the second best team from the SEC wins it or the worst team from the SEC wins it.

Dear God, when I said I’d give anything for my Heels to beat Dook in 2022 and end Voldemort’s evil reign, I didn’t mean for you to curse my team in all sports until the end of time. #GoHeels

Poor base running decision by UNC
Run on Dasan Harris at your own risk but I don’t advise it!! HIGH IQ PLAY. #Soonerspic.twitter.com/kXUfobi4am

Costly mistakes tonight.
Tar Heels are letting a 9-hole hitter who was hitting around .200 coming into this series look like vintage Mickey Mantle out there.
Not gonna win playing like that.

Just a god awful game 3 from UNC. Pitching. Base running. Plate discipline. Everything is awful https://t.co/5YIQTWmlxZ

Losses in too many championship games.
This decade UNC athletics has played in a national championship game in men's basketball and baseball, ACC tournament title games in men's basketball and football. They have lost them all.
