Wayne Gretzky’s 894 career goals was the NHL’s other “unbreakable” record until April 6, 2025. Fueled by a sheer force of will, longevity and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, Alex Ovechkin finally chased down “The Great One” for the title of hockey’s greatest goal scorer.
The record-breaking goal No. 895 was quintessential Ovechkin — a powerful, decisive shot unleashed from his familiar left-circle “office” on the power play. Upon scoring, Ovi turned and slid on his stomach before getting mobbed by Capitals teammates in a release of joyful exuberance in front of Gretzky, who like Howe decades earlier was in attendance at UBS Arena for a symbolic passing of the torch.
The moment was made all the more impressive by Ovechkin’s advancing age. At 39, he became the second-oldest player in NHL history to score 40 or more goals during his 2024-25 record chase season. Whereas Gretzky’s NHL career ended at age 38, when he managed just nine goals in his final season, Ovechkin is still actively adding to his record goal total into his 40s.
