American ski queen Mikaela Shiffrin has made some of the online abuse public which she recieved around the Milan/Cortina Olympics.

Shiffrin shared some of the comments in an Instagram reel ahead of weekend World Cup races in Åre, Sweden.

"Shame on you traitor", "Stay in Italy bitch" and "you suck" were just some of the comments.

They were seemingly in reference to critical remarks on the political situation in the United States she had made along with saying that diversity and inclusion were important values for her.

Other American athletes were also critical at last month's Games, especially concerning the government crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Thar led to a backlash as they were accused of not being true patriots. Freestyle skier Hunter Hess was named a "real loser" by US President Donald Trump.

The American team said that Shiffrin had stayed away from social media during the Games and that they had contacted those running the platforms to assure that abusive comments were deleted.

There were also comments such as "you will choke again" after Shiffrin had failed to medal at the 2022 Games. This time around she got gold in her pet event, the slalom, with the biggest winning margin since 1998 in any Olympic ski race.

Shiffrin is the most successful World Cup skier in history with 108 race victories, has won the slalom title a record ninth time and can secure a sixth overall title.
