Sixers target LeBron James to continue taking his time on his decision

The Philadelphia 76ers have had an eventful offseason with the big additions they made in free agency as well as the big blockbuster deal to acquire Jaylen Brown from the rival Boston Celtics. The Sixers were able to have a successful offseason, but they now have their eyes on an even bigger addition: LeBron James.

The 41-year-old future Hall of Famer is set to enter year 24 in the league and is still an impactful player at his age. James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds while playing in 60 games in the 2025-26 season. He then averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 6.7 rebounds in the playoffs as he led the Los Angeles Lakers to Round 2 of the postseason.

As free agency continues for James, the focus remains on three teams: the Sixers, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Miami Heat. With that being said, one has to wonder when James will make this decision. The 2026-27 schedule will be released soon and his decision will play a big hand in how the schedule will play out. However, per agent Rich Paul, that decision will continue to wait.

Paul stated on an episode of the "Game Over" podcast (h/t ESPN):

"We're not going to be rushed," Paul said on the latest podcast episode of "Game Over" with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul, released Monday evening. "We're not going to be rushed. It's his choice to make and when he makes the choice, he'll make it."

"There's been several people to call and say, 'Hey, Rich, is there anything more we should be doing? We could be doing?'" Paul said. "And my answer is, 'No. We don't need you to go above and beyond about anything. We understand it. It's clear. All the messages have been sent.'"

The Sixers have an open roster spot, which is assumably being kept open for James himself, but Philadelphia could also use more depth at the big man spot behind Joel Embiid. Philadelphia has unproven Ariel Hukporti and young Adem Bona backing up the big fella, but if the Sixers need to wait on James to decide where he wants to play basketball in the upcoming season.
