LAS VEGAS -- The Philadelphia 76ers improved to 2-0 in the summer league when they knocked off the Indiana Pacers on Saturday, 100-93 in overtime. The Sixers received strong efforts from just about everybody, but rookie Labaron Philon Jr. continues to shine.
Philon had 24 points on 9-for-22 shooting with six assists and came up with a big bucket in the 2-minute overtime to lift Philadelphia out in steamy Las Vegas. He shot 2-for-5 from deep and had three rebounds in order to help the Sixers get the job done.
With that being said, summer league coach TJ DiLeo sees room for improvement after the win over the Pacers. Naturally, there is work to be done for Philon following only two summer league games under his belt, but DiLeo wants him to understand how to attack pressing defenses.
"It's just like being a little bit more decisive on it, punishing the pressure," DiLeo stated. "We got to help him a little bit. Like, some of our guys were a little slow getting up past half court. Like we got to get those guys to the corner a little faster, and just give him more space to go by guys."
Philon only had two turnovers, but there were plenty of times when he was unable to really get the ball past half court, which hurt Philadelphia's execution in the second half when they saw a 24-point lead slip away.
"It's something that he's gonna see in the league, and just learning how to handle through that pressure," DiLeo added. "Like, have the strength and body control to get off those little touches that they're letting you do, and it's a great lesson for him."
When asked how he would attack pressure defense moving forward, Philon focused on an upcoming film session. Obviously, he is just a rookie so there is a lot of work to do, but he is embracing it as he moves forward.
"I mean, basically they're just trying to wear us down," Philon explained. "They were trying to pressure the ball the whole game. I feel like once they do that, they get tired themselves. So, we just got to be able to maintain the level of confidence of just like bringing the ball down the court and getting into our actions. So, I feel like that's a great thing for us to see, and we’re gonna move forward. We’re gonna watch the film. We’re gonna learn."
The Sixers will continue the summer league on Tuesday when they take on the Houston Rockets.
