Sioux Falls Lincoln 4x200m relay team anchor Griffin Fischer just wanted to catch anyone in front of him.

The Legacy relay team was just ahead of Fischer when he received his team's baton, but they weren't for long. Fischer turned on the jets to rush ahead of Legacy and help the Patriots team forge their own.

Fischer, Mikey Roche, Evan Abild, and Ben Burchett finished the race with a 1:27.06 time, shattering the all-time state record which was previously set by Sioux Falls Christian.

“I think we knew we could do it,” Fischer said. “We just had to be confident enough to go out there and do it.”

Fischer said the moment was extra special for him because this was his first time winning something at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays.

This was also the first time Fischer, Roche, Abild, and Burchett were all a part of the 4x200m team, but the Lincoln coaching staff had complete confidence that this group could win and make history as well. Roche said that after last year’s 4x200m team finished fourth all-time he felt pretty confident that they could get it done this year.

“We knew it was possible,” Roche said.

“I’m just so happy for those guys,” Lincoln track and field coach Jim Jarovski said. “Mikey Roche, Evan Abild, Ben Burchett, and Griffin Fischer are very talented but even better kids. Very proud of them because I know this is something they had their eyes set on.”
