PEARL – Between Dan Sinclair and the cavernous confines of Trustmark Park, Mooreville’s offense was well-contained Tuesday afternoon.

The Troopers managed just three hits and fell 2-1 to Seminary in Game 1 of the Class 2A state title series. Game 2 is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Sinclair, a senior lefty, was nearly untouchable for five-plus innings, allowing just two hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Mooreville (28-10), one of the best power-hitting teams in the state, hit a couple of balls that would have left a typical high school park.

“It kind of takes away what got you here for some teams, and it’s be real nice to have home-and-home, and I’ve always lobbied for home-and-home, and if there’s a third game, we’ll do it at a neutral site,” Mooreville coach Derek Thompson said. “But listen, they played on the same field we did. They put some (at-bats) together, and they deserved to win that ballgame.”

After Brody Thompson’s leadoff single in the first inning, the Troopers were held hitless until the sixth. Cooper Goff blasted a ground-rule double to put runners at second and third with no outs, and that chased Sinclair (9-0) from the mound.

J.D. Harvey took the hill and minimized the damage. He yielded an RBI single to Eli McDaniels but struck out the other three batters he faced.

“That’s kind of been our Achilles’ heel all year, just can’t get that big hit in the games that we’ve lost against quality teams,” Thompson said.

The good news for Mooreville is that it still has its top two pitchers – Thompson and Wyatt McDaniels – available for the rest of the series. Freshman Carson Hicks got the start Tuesday and turned in five strong innings, allowing two runs on eight hits.

Seminary (32-8) scored both of its runs in the third inning.

Extra Bases

Big Inning: Stanley Peters scored on a wild pitch, and then Landon Bush delivered an RBI single in the third.

Big Stat: Mooreville turned three double plays.

Coach Speak: “Sinclair’s been good for us all year. He’s a lefty that’s got decent velo, and he’s hard to hit, and the ball runs, and he gets people out.” – Seminary’s Clay Bush
