Julia Simon kept her cool two months after returning from a short ban for credit card fraud when she anchored France to Olympic biathlon mixed relay gold on Sunday.

Simon inherited a lead of almost 20 seconds from World Cup leader Lou Jeamonnot after earlier legs from Eric Perrot and Quentin Fillon Maillet.

Simon hit all 10 targets to bring home the gold 25.8 seconds ahead of hosts Italy.

The bronze went to Germany, whose retirement-bound anchor Franziska Preuss, the reigning World Cup champion, missed a possible silver when she had to ski a penalty lap in the final shooting.

The race was a four-team battle until Jeanmonnot gave France the decisive edge on the third leg. The fourth side were 2022 winners Norway, who missed a medal when their anchor Maren Kirkeeide had two penalty laps.

France meanwhile took gold as in 2018 with the help of 10-time world champion Simon, who together with Fillon Maillet was also on the French team that won silver in 2022.

Simon was in October sentenced to a suspended three-month prison term and banned until mid-December after she had used stolen credit card details belonging to team-mate Justine Braisaz-Bouchet and a team physiotherapist to buy goods online.
