Shreyas Iyer has officially been handed the reins of India's T20I side as the team gears up for its tour of Ireland and England across June and July.
Alongside this appointment, Tilak Varma takes over as his deputy, stepping into the vice-captain's role previously held by Axar Patel.
The squad announcement also brought attention to 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has earned his maiden senior call-up on the strength of a sensational IPL campaign with Rajasthan Royals.
Iyer's elevation to the national captaincy hasn't come out of nowhere. It stems almost entirely from the leadership credentials he built across various IPL franchises over the years.

Shreyas Iyer was first appointed as captain in 2018 by Delhi Capitals. The team was struggling, but with Iyer at the helm, it started producing results. Eventually, they reached the final in 2020.
Iyer later moved to Kolkata Knight Riders, and he led the franchise to the IPL title in 2024 after a sensational group-stage campaign.
Impressed with the result in Kolkata, Punjab Kings broke the bank in the auction and signed him for a hefty ₹26.75 crore ahead of the 2025 season.

Iyer justified that investment by guiding Punjab to their first final appearance in years. He emerged as their batting mainstay and contributed 604 runs that season. However, the 2026 edition didn't go as planned, as Punjab missed out on the playoffs despite winning six of their first seven games.
Nonetheless, the team management firmly backs Iyer, and he remains the man to lead their charge once again in the next season.
Across his time leading Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings, Iyer has captained in 101 IPL matches altogether. Here is his captaincy record in IPL:
Iyer's first match as a captain comes against Ireland on June 26.
Iyer's leadership credentials extend into domestic cricket as well, where he guided Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title during the 2022-23 season, defeating Himachal Pradesh in the final.
Across his time leading the side in that tournament, he captained in 13 matches, winning 11 and losing just twice, translating to an impressive win percentage of 84.6.
