Congress is in the process of trying to solve the problems that the NCAA refuses to fix — leveling the NIL/transfer portal playing field, and figuring how to navigate realignment. Focusing on realignment specifically, one of the options on the table is capping the Big Ten and SEC to a certain amount of schools per conference, and there’s also been a lot of talk about the SEC leaving the NCAA as a whole.
Because, you know, the SEC is too good than to stay in the asylum anymore (sarcasm).
When it comes to the ACC, nobody really knows what the future will hold, but there’s been whispers for years that UNC is a potential target for one of the bigger two conferences and that the school is interested. Here’s the thing: it’s probably been discussed, but the Grant of Rights has become such an issue for any school even thinking about leaving that it’s probably not even worth the conversation, especially now that programs are bleeding money due to revenue sharing with their players. Is that to say UNC couldn’t figure it out? Not necessarily, but it would be a very hard thing to pull off, and I have a feeling they would have to get donors onboard as well.
That said, let’s have some fun and discuss a hypothetical anyway. Let’s say money isn’t an issue to Carolina, they are more than willing to buy their way out of the Grant of Rights, and they begin seriously considering next steps. Would you want them to head to the Big Ten or SEC? Or would you want them to stay in the ACC? There’s good arguments for both sides of this conversation, but ultimately what it comes down to is money vs. tradition. UNC would undoubtedly pull in more money in another conference, but would it be worth losing some of their soul?
