The arms race in the NFC West just went nuclear. If there was a stronger adjective, I'd use it, because that is what occurred on Monday morning. According to NFL insiders Ian Rapoport, Adam Schefter, and Tom Pelissero, the Los Angeles Rams are finalizing a blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Browns to acquire superstar defensive end Myles Garrett.
According to Rapoport, the deal will include sending LA's own star defensive end Jared Verse to Cleveland, as well as other draft pick considerations. As it stands, one 2027 first round pick is among the negotiations, which have yet to be finalized.
Garrett is coming off a historic season with the Browns, where he set the NFL record with 23 sacks in a single year. Overall, Garrett has 125 sacks to his name. Now, he will take his talents to a Rams team that was the only true competition for the Super Bowl LX champion Seattle Seahawks. Clearly, Los Angeles is doing whatever it takes to ensure they claim another Lombardi on their own home turf... which is where Super Bowl LXI will be held.
The margin between the Seahawks and Rams was razor thin last year, as both teams were about as evenly matched as possible. Seattle ultimately edged out Los Angeles, but the Rams are focused on not letting that happen again.
When the Rams shocked everyone by drafting quarterback Ty Simpson, my initial reaction was "oh, this is going to be the last year for both Matt Stafford and head coach Sean McVay. They are gearing up for one last run." The fact LA will most assuredly be mortgaging the future for Garrett only confirms this belief of mine.
This is certainly the biggest splash of the offseason, and will become a major chess piece for the Seahawks to overcome at least twice in the coming campaign. Still, the Rams had a strong defensive line last year, and they still couldn't beat the Seahawks. The difference came down to special teams, and I'm not sure how Garrett solves that issue.
