It's not every day that an All-Pro defensive tackle requests a trade, but that's what happened on Monday, and it's something the Chicago Bears should seriously be looking into.

New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has requested a trade and will not be reporting to the team's offseason training this week, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. Lawrence is looking for a new contract and is ready to play elsewhere if he can't get it in New York.

Lawrence, a 2019 first-round pick, has been one of the elite defensive tackles in the league over the last several years. He has earned Pro Bowl honors three times and made Second-Team All-Pro twice. In 2024, Lawrence totaled nice sacks and eight tackles for loss, all career highs despite playing in just 12 games. Though his stats dipped in 2025, Lawrence still brings a dominant presence to the defensive line.

While Giants general manager Joe Schoen is publicly committed to keeping Lawrence, the Bears should be one of the first teams inquiring about his asking price. Chicago is coming off an 11-6 season with an NFC North title but struggled mightily on the defensive line last year and is still looking for a difference maker up the middle despite signing former Pro Bowler Grady Jarrett last offseason.

Lawrence will be 29 years old later this year and is going to command new money, and the Bears would need to create more salary cap space, having just under $300k available, but general manager Ryan Poles would be foolish not to try and put together an enticing package for the Giants. With three picks in the top 60 of the 2026 NFL Draft, Chicago has assets to use in a potential deal. Lawrence is a player who elevates everyone around him and would solve a big problem with the Bears defense.

We'll see if any movement takes place regarding Lawrence, but hopefully the Bears are in play for this big fish as they look to go further in 2026.
