ROUSES POINT — Section V’s Wayne-Finger Lakes came into Saturday’s non-league hockey game against Northeastern Clinton with a 10-4 overall record.
The Cougars, meanwhile, who don’t have a deep roster to start with, had five of their skaters not available for the game.
Not a good match-up on paper for the Cougars, it would seem. But sports can be unpredictable, and they were in this case.
Greyson Lafountain turned away 37 of 39 shots on goal, and the Cougars held on for a 3-2 win over the Panthers.
“We came into the game shorthanded, with only 10 skaters available against a quality team from Section V,” NCCS coach Scott Lafountain said. “I have nothing but good things to say about our boys today for their effort from Greyson on out. Everyone who played in this game can share in the win. I’m proud of the boys.”
Cobe Lafountain gave the Cougars the lead just 1:19 into the game before Graham Mauchly tallied for WFL at 5:38 to tie it.
Gage Dumas then scored his first varsity career goal at 10:10 to put NCCS ahead to stay at 2-1.
Landon Grabie gave the Cougars a two-goal lead with 1:10 gone in the second period, and William Hand pulled WFL to 3-2 with 3:01 remaining in regulation.
The Panthers took a late penalty and never pulled their goalie for an extra attacker in the final two minutes.
Greyson Lafountain stopped 19 of 20 WFL shots on goal in the third period to preserve the victory.
“We never trailed in the game,” Lafountain said. “WFL made a push in the third when we started to tire, but the boys continued to battle to the end and finished off an exciting win.
“Hopefully, a game and result like this will give the boys added confidence moving forward.”

PLATTSBURGH — Sean Allen scored four goals to lead Wayne-Finger Lakes past the Spartans in non-league play, despite Ryan Campbell scoring three goals for Saranac.
Gabe Moore also scored for the Spartans, who held a 2-0 lead just 3:46 into the contest before the Panthers tallied two short-handed goals to tie it.
It then went back and forth with Sean Allen getting the game-winning goal at 14:26 of the third to break a 4-all tie. William Hand would then add an empty-goal with six seconds left in regulation.
Marco Palmisano made 28 saves in the WFL nets and Max Coryer 32 stops for the Spartans.
Saranac coach Robby Knowles was less than happy with his team.
“Our power play was awful,” he said. “WFL is extremely aggressive, so we talked a lot about getting pucks up the ice quickly, but we played in slow motion.
“Our back-checking efforts were also sub-par. They scored four goals on two-on-ones and one breakaway goal. Coryer made a few bail-out saves for us in the second and third periods, but we hung him out to dry too many times.
“For us to be successful as a team, we need our best players to be on top of their game, and we didn’t have that from some of them in this game.”
