Shedeur Sanders didn’t just get drafted by the Cleveland Browns — he made it clear he’s got something to prove. In his first call with Cleveland media following his surprise fifth-round selection, the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback didn’t dodge the pressure. Instead, he leaned into it.
“I’ve just got to prove and show what I’m capable of,” Sanders said. “What fuels me is my purpose in life.” For Buffaloes fans who watched Sanders throw for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns last season despite being sacked 43 times — the chip on his shoulder should sound familiar.
Embracing the Moment, Ignoring the Noise
Sanders addressed questions about his polarizing pre-draft process head-on. While other teams reportedly passed due to concerns over perceived arrogance, Sanders was focused on one thing: staying true to himself.
“I think what happened was I had a great interview and a great process with the Browns… Anything outside the organization is really a non-factor to me now,” he said. "I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity throughout everything. I don't ever focus on a negative.”
Buffs fans will recognize that focus — it’s the same mindset that helped him stay composed through a storm of media attention and high expectations under Coach Prime.

A Fit with Cleveland, and a Fresh Start
He didn’t hesitate when asked about the Browns’ fit: “I know I’m going to fit in perfectly,” Sanders said. His confidence wasn’t arrogance. It was purpose. He acknowledged needing to grow — citing the need to clean up his game — but also expressed readiness to work. “I’m here ready to work. The opportunity to see the real me… not stuff that might not be true.”
That kind of authenticity is exactly what endeared him to Buff Nation. Now, Cleveland gets a front-row seat.
Proving the Believers Right
More than anything, Sanders said, this moment is about proving the Browns right — specifically head coach Kevin Stefanski and GM Andrew Berry. “The main thing is proving Stefanski and Mr. Berry right about picking me,” he said.
It’s a message that resonates all the way back to Boulder, where belief in Shedeur ran deep — even when the rest of the football world had doubts.
For Buffaloes fans, the journey continues — just with a different uniform. And if Shedeur has his way, it’s only just beginning.
