There aren't many people who understand the feeling that Shedeur Sanders has felt this weekend, being mocked as high as No. 3 overall and falling all the way to the fifth round in the NFL Draft, finally taken by Cleveland.
One former Green Bay Packer ans New York Jet can, however.
Before his Hall of Fame NFL career, Favre was trying to establish himself as a premiere quarterback at Southern Mississippi. In his senior year of college, Favre threw just seven touchdowns and six interceptions after surviving from a near-fatal car accident during the summer.
Favre was drafted in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. Falcons head coach Jerry Glanville made it known that he did not approve of the Favre selection, going as far as saying it would take a plane crash for Favre to enter a game.
While a plane crash didn't happen, Favre made appearances in two games for Atlanta, throwing an interception in his first NFL pass attempt.
Favre was traded to the Green Bay Packers the following year, and spent 16 seasons in Green Bay, being named to nine of his 11 Pro Bowls and three First-Team All-Pro selections. Favre won three MVP Awards and a Super Bowl with the Packers.
Following his Packer career, Favre spent a year with the Jets and two with the Minnesota Vikings.
Favre took to X to share his experience, and while he didn't outright name Sanders, the message was a clear nod to the Colorado quarterback.
"Heck I didn’t care when I got drafted, I just wanted a team to give me a chance wherever I went," Favre wrote on social media. "It’s what you do when your # is called that matters, not when you were taken. On top of that, the team that drafted me didn’t even want me."
Despite not being taken in the first round, Favre's career worked out just fine, becoming just one of two Hall of Famers in his class (Aeneas Williams being the other). He led all 1991 draftees in Pro Bowl appearances (11), First-Team All-Pro selections (3), and started more years in the NFL than any other player, his 19 years far outclasses the three fellow draftees who capped out at 13.
